Pick it yourself

Plan a U-pick farm day without a wasted drive.

Pick-your-own fields can close when a crop is picked out, the soil is wet, or heat becomes unsafe. Start with a same-day farm update, then use this checklist.

Same-day checks

01

Crop status

Confirm what is open, how much is left, and whether picking starts later than the farm itself.

02

Entry rules

Check reservations, admission, minimum purchases, last field entry, and pet policy.

03

Containers

Ask if the farm supplies containers, charges for them, or allows yours to be weighed empty.

04

Conditions

Review heat, smoke, lightning, mud, shade, restrooms, and accessible field options.

Pack once

What to bring

  • Closed-toe shoes with traction
  • Water, sun protection, and weather layers
  • Farm-approved containers and reusable bags
  • A cooler for delicate produce or a long trip home
  • A backup payment method
  • A realistic plan for using or preserving the harvest

Working-farm safety

Wash hands after animal contact.

CDC guidance notes that healthy-looking farm animals can still carry germs. Supervise children, keep food and cups out of animal areas, and wash with soap and running water after contact and before eating.
